That is the one consistent place S&W put the serial #. I ran into the serial number (AJUXXXX) on a Model 19-5 . Photos attached. All serial numbers are not listed. You have to read between the lines. In July 1985 it ended with AHT which is close to end of AH series or close to AI, next would be AJ series, then in November they started with ALA. Your AJU is in between July and November 1985..Generally the Pre war serial # on the butt reads with barrel to the right including I frame serial numbers on the forestrap. After WW II the serial # reads with barrel to the left (except for serial numbers on the forestrap thru 1957). Pre-War serial #s are centered on the butt, unless there was a swivel. Great looking Model 41, 3228 would be a first year gun. Don't need the serial number to see it's the first type. Hate to say it but, you will find that the box is not original to that gun. Check for a serial number under the bottom section, written in white pen. That box is for a 7XXXX or higher.
