Either one may lead to the derate and check engine light. If it’s showing empty, you most likely have an issue with the sending unit on the def tank. Check the connections to the tank and make sure all the wiring is okay. If so, you’re likely looking at a failed sending unit.
If it is derated, it may tell you when you go through the diagnostic area of the in dash display. It will say something like "Derate". Then again, it may not and be only visible to a connected computer. But driving it will tell you as well. Low power, pretty sluggish.
