3. Dec 30, 2012. #5. I'm a MS4, but have been thinking about Cards vs. GI vs. hem/onc for a while and rotated them as MS3/4.... Both cards and hem/onc are saturated fields, neither is virgin land. GI is a saturated field clinically but research is more "virgin" compared to the other two.I wrote all 2500+ questions/answers myself, and I tried to create high-yield questions with succinct explanations. The latter should be helpful for rapid-fire review prior to a board examination. The questions cover all of the Benign Hematology, Malignant Hematology, and Solid tumors. Thought I should leave some feedback on heme/onc's behalf: 1. Lifestyle wise, Allergy is definitely better. Don't know if that is such a priority for people in medicine. I believe oncologist consistently have one of the highest job satisfaction among all fields. As stated above, most allergist work 4 day week, mostly if not all outpatient.None of these aspects are entirely unique to heme/onc individually but the entire package is a fairly unique combo of both challenges and opportunities. Anything (or almost) can be lifestyle if you so choose after residency. I practiced in heme/onc for about 8 years and eventually left.

I have a couple of questions. I am aware that there are probably fantastic threads describing the practice/daily life of a heme/onc doc, primarily from a medical standpoint (is it more inpatient/outpatient, what is practice like, etc) Also, I am interested in lifestyle of a heme/onc doc. Speaking anecdotally, I don't know a single oncologist working that much. Most I have talked to work 4 days a week and spend a few hours per week at home charting. 62 just seems very high, given that the most recent data for orthopedic surgery, a specialty known to have a poor lifestyle, was 52 hours per week.

Heme/onc may be perceived to be more "respected" among the public. The average person hears pediatrician, emergency doctor, cardiologist, or "brain surgeon" and thinks that's cool. However, public perception isn't and shouldn't be a reliable guide. As almost all physicians know, there are good and bad physicians in all specialties.In general Rad-Onc tends to be much better in lifestyle. this is highly decisive. Rad onc is somewhate more technical related, I think. You like call, rounding the wards, placing catheters and chemo -> heme/onc.
