146. Jun 13, 2016. #3. There is a screw on the portside of the motor which controls the idle. You firstly have to make sure that your cable puls the throttle all the way back. If this does not happen you have to adjust your cables. Another problem can be that the roller of the carb hits the cam to soon. This also increases the idle rpm.To set the timing on that engine, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary). Rig up a spark tester on the #1 cylinder plug wire. Put a timing light on #1, and place the timing linkage in idle position. Crank the engine, and note the reading. Should be around 4*ATDC. While the engine is cranking, move the linkage manually, watching the timing move using the timing light. It will move on the flywheel toward that 18* mark.
Had an ignition issue at end of last year and I replaced stator, timer base, powerpack and voltage regulator. Now, at idle forward it hovers around 650rpms which is great most of the time. However occasionally it dips down to 600rpms and wants to stall. No lean sneeze or anything this is not a carb issue. All throttle plates are closed at idle.

You are only concerned about the lower screw at idle. The upper screw is only the WOT stop for the carbs. Your idle should be about 1000-1200 rpm on muffs.It appears that on my 1993 Johnson 25hp, one has to set the Joe Reeves method at 0 degrees off the factory specified maximum spark advance. The boat ran better but somewhere between 2000-3000 rpm the motor shakes a little as if it’s struggling. I have a 2000 Johnson 50HP model J50PLSSM it dies at idle, if you use the high idle start it will start and stay running @ 2000 RPMs occasionally running away to 5000+ RPMS, but at low idle it dies every time. Carbs cleaned and rebuilt ( intermediate orifice was found in the bottom cowling prompting the rebuild)

To set the timing on that 115hp Evinrude, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary). Rig a spark tester and have the spark gap set to 7/16".Then push the magneto control arm all the way until it hits the full advance stop. Look up underneath the edge of the flywheel and see if mark "a" on the flywheel is lined up with mark "b" on the timing plate base. That is full advanced.
