Palisades/Alpine has great terrain and international feel. Heavenly has great nightlife, cheaper housing. Northstar has good intermediate terrain and long lines. Kirkwood, great terrain, isolated. Anything in Truckee is about 15-20 minutes from the resort without traffic. Nightlife is very minimal unless you go to Reno (45min -1hr drive) or South lake (1hr -1.5 hr drive). Kirkwood is the best skiing in the area IMHO. It is remote though. Flying into Reno is your best bet but Sacramento is not too bad if you're able to get a good flight deal. For advanced skiers squaw, kirkwood or mammoth (not really tahoe) are the way to go. Palisades/Squaw is great, but the parking lot does fill up so you want to make sure you leave with plenty of time. There will be significant traffic between Tahoe City and the mountain pretty much every weekend. But if you don't make it into the Squaw lots, you can always try for Alpine, as its right next door. If you know you’ll be in the area during a specific time, try to make a reservation. Additionally, don’t expect to find any free camping right on the lake.
