Apr 27, 2014 · My Kawasaki FC540V is not getting fuel. I replaced the fuel pump still no help. The problem is no vacuum in the crankcase. If I put a guage on the port from the crankcase and try to start it it just flutters around zero. Oil filler is cap and O ring are tight. Has 120 PSI on a compression test. I need ideas, troubshooting a Kawasaki FC540V. This thing is driving me nuts...its on a Deere 185, mower is in good shape.. Yes, the coil gap is correct at .012" I have verified good spark all the way through the RPM range until the crankshaft stops. This is a VERY common problem with John Deere / Kawasaki FC540V engines.

I've got an older John Deere mower with a kawasaki fc420v engine. Once started, the engine purrs like a kitten at any rpm. I couldn't ask for a smoother running motor. The problem is getting the thing started. It backfires out of the intake and exhaust. It takes 30-45 seconds to get the thing started. The "new" style FC540V engines didn't use a igniter, but required a different flywheel as well. If a "new style" coil was used WITH the the igniter, it would not spark.
