Australian students who apply to the Veterinary Science course here are required to do at least one pre-vet year, making many of them 19 years old when they are first years. Our year, however, has many mature students, I would say the average age of students starting first year was around 25. The range was 17-33!

Obviously at a university with a vet school there are more opportunities to work in veterinary medicine in general, and in particular to work with and get to know professors and advisers that will be able to help you out more than somewhere like UCF. Most of my shadowing and volunteer experiences have been in the healthcare field at hospitals and private practices. I haven’t shadowed a veterinarian yet, but I am actively working on it. The biggest advice I give to high schoolers is to keep them grades/test scores up to get the most scholarships possible.
