The Saginaw would never hold up under 500 horsepower. The saginaw was designed for non-performance cars. The maximum horsepower that a saginaw can handle is 250-300 horsepower. SS is right, but a muncie won't do you much good with a true 500 horsepower motor, you'll have to go with a Super T-10, T-5 or a T-56.

The 4L80E will theoretically consume more HP than a 4L60E or other lighter duty transmission. It has a positive displacement pump as opposed to a variable displacement, it is heavier, has more rotating mass, more clutch drag, and on the surface would seem to "eat" HP. The biggest loss would seem to come from the heavier rotating mass.The stock 4l60e 4l65e 4l70e's have a "factory" rated torque limit. IIRC its 360 lb/ft for the 60e, and 380 for the 65e and 400 for the 70e. Those would be engine torque because teh actual torque the trans sees after it passes through the torque converter is much more. peace. Hog.
