Imo Ryze is a great champion to one trick because he teaches you mechanical skill, resource management, wave management, and overall good macro/micro. As far as worth he's a safe blind pick, and he has a freedom to build what he wants more than most champions. He can fit into a lot of comps and he can carry.Oh and the 1 man army perk is a must! Presence of Mind on Ryze. Even though i think as secondary trees the Domination tree with "Ravenous Hunter" and "Eyeball collection" and the Inspiration tree with "Perfect Timing" and "Cosmic Insight" are superior, I would also consider the Precision tree with "Presence of Mind" and "Cut down" which could solve two of Ryze' problems. Just make up any random vullshit in champ select and it will probably do ok.

He is decent when picked into an enemy teamcomp that allows him to play. But that right there is the problem, he has a lot of champions which don't really allow him to exist.

Only thing that helds him back is stuff like WW Kha Udyr ...Then there's Cassiopeia who gets countered by picks like Ori rather than Ryze. Kassadin is an easy match up for Ryze but I think Kassa can survive the lane pretty well and lose only slightly. I'd consider picking something like Renekton or Akshan if they go Kassa.
