I would however recommend changing the rear differential fluid at about 10K. Not sure so much about the 4runner or Tacoma but my FJ fluid was totally black at 10K. I changed my rear diff fluid on my 4runner when I bought it with 23K. One of the 1st things I did to it. And like always loosen your fill plug 1st.Change that diff oil. Changed the rear differential oil at 45K, it had a good amount of shavings, which is normal for an initial fluid change. I changed the transfer case oil as well, visually it looked great. Just remember, Toyota specs a straight 75 Winter transfer case oil, it costs ~$40/L and 1.1L is required.
Agreed, up to a certain point. Brake fluid and coolant I do like to set a max time interval for changes because they degrade with time. Engine oil I would leave in there max 2-3 years for an infrequently driven engine just due to condensation. 2017 T4R TRD Off Road Premium. Did my first oil change at 5500 miles. Did the 2nd one at 13,000 miles...also did the front and rear diff oil at that time as well. Will probably do the next oil change at 20,000 miles. I don't really have a schedule that I follow, but I'll never go over 10,000 miles between changes.The answer to your question is probably. I think the recommended change interval is 45k miles if you don't tow. I think if you tow a lot it's every 15k miles. If you're not the original owner of the car (or even if you are) you should go register at Toyota Owners and you can see all the maintenance that's been done to your car at the dealership.Since my 4Runner has an open diff in the rear I would prefer to use a diff fluid that doesn’t have a friction modifier already added. The amsoil long life synthetic fluid doesn’t seem to have a friction modifier in it so Im now considering that. The biggest tip when doing this is to remove the FILL plug before the drain plug. Should the fill plug be rusted or too hard to remove, you haven't yet drained out the fluid. I use Amsoil sever gear 75w-90 in the front diff, rear diff, and transfer case. X2 except I have been using Mobil 1.
