The answer Linus gave was awful and extremely anti-consumer. His claim to not burden his family, is him protecting himself at a detriment to the customer. There is no way to frame this in a way that isn't a net negative to the consumer, and a net positive to his business. He's basically just said to customers "trust me bro".
